One story. Two couples.

I fell in love with a man who didn’t exist.

What started out as romance ended in hell.
His words turned to razor blades.
His kisses converted to fists.
His embrace became my cage.
His body transformed into a weapon, stealing parts of me until ultimately….
I broke.

I hated him.
My sole job in life became to protect our daughter.

I wasn’t sure I’d ever escape the prison he’d skillfully crafted from my fears.
Until the day our savior arrived.

This is the story of how I escaped the man who thought he owned me.
The transfer of my life and my family.

RATING:

"What do you need, Clare?"
"You."
"Then get over here and take it."

Holy cow, what a mind-blowing thrill this series has been! I can’t remember the last time I read two books so quickly and so obsessively, glued onto the pages like nothing else in the world mattered, but when a story is this gripping and the writing is this good, nothing could ever peel me away from it. Now, being a much-coveted sequel to a story that had already set a remarkable tone to the series as a whole, I honestly never thought this book could live up to my own high expectations of it, yet it somehow not only met them—it hit them out of the ballpark. This series remains composed of two very distinctive romances, illustrative of two very different couples and the emotional and sexual dynamics within them. But the more we delve into their respective stories, the more we uncover all the ways they would forever be tied to one another by an unexpected twist of fate that might have brought them into each other’s lives unwillingly, but then given a common purpose to fight for. A tale of hope, survival and unconditional, motherly love—this is first and foremost Clare’s story, but it also blends seamlessly into Roman and Elisabeth’s storyline, turning it into a heartbreaking, exhilarating page-turner with a tender romance at the core of it. An absolute joy to read.

I didn’t live in a world where I was allowed to focus on anything but keeping myself alive and my daughter safe.

Clare Noir has spent the last seven years of her young life trapped in a living nightmare. Stuck in a violent marriage that has slowly bled her of all desire to live, Clare sacrifices her body and soul daily in order to keep her baby daughter safe from her husband’s vicious hands. But when a small ray of hope suddenly appears before her in the form of two comforting, blue eyes that make her feel safe for the very first time in her life, she allows herself a connection she knows could cost them both.

When you’re completely alone in life, surrounded by darkness on all sides, it doesn’t take much more than a warm smile and simple conversation to convince yourself that maybe there was more.

Heath Light is a man on a mission—he is determined to put his life and career on the line to save a young woman from her cruel fate, and nothing could stop him from bringing her and her daughter Tessa to safety. The more time he spends with Clare, however—protecting her, offering her all that her broken heart and body need to heal, and creating small pockets of true happiness for them both—the more their feelings for one another spiral out of control, sweet but blistering passion consuming them both.

“You sore yet?” he asked, easing back inside me and then draping my legs over his shoulders.
I shook my head.
“That’s about to change.”

In the arms of a kind man with gentle hands, Clare learns what love is supposed to feel like, despite what her life has taught her. But as danger lurks in the shadows, reminding them daily they’d never breathe easily whilst waiting for it to strike, Clare must also learn to become strong enough to save herself, even when the man she loves is willing to die accomplishing that task.

Somewhere along the line, being with them stopped being about an investigation and became everything to do with showing a little girl and her mother that there was a world that didn’t involve beatings and tears.

With so many clever plot twists that have our minds spinning in a flurry of emotions and two stunning romances at its very essence, the author never stopped adding to the intense emotional palette of this story, making the reader genuinely invested in the characters and their respective second chances at finding happiness. And by giving us two strong, fearless heroines who love fiercely and selflessly, and two hot but bossy, alpha males who would do anything for the women they love—the perfect formula for some skin-tingling romance in my eyes—Ms Martinez made sure that we were utterly mesmerized until the very last page. I cannot recommend this duet highly enough.
