There’s nothing that makes me believe in happily-ever-after more than the idea of an estranged couple finding their way back to one another after years apart, and Kristen Ashley’s new novel is an absolute masterclass in character-driven storytelling, and in its nuanced portrait of two people fighting for what they should have never stopped being—perfect together. But nothing in this novel is easy or cheaply sentimental. Familial tensions, complex human bonds, and long-hidden truths transform the story into a powerful pressure-cooker of emotions that never loses its distinctive Kristen Ashley flavour and depth. There are passages I wanted inked on my skin for the rest of my life, there are scenes I would never want to relive, and there is so much beauty in the most unexpected of moments, all coming together to tell a story of love, forgiveness, and second chances in life, but also of breaking the cycle that is holding us down and setting the example for those we love the most.

What I can only describe as the love child of every soap opera I have every watched, this wonderful, slow-paced, drama-rich, age-gap romance kept me in its claws beginning to end. It’s the story of Indiana, a young girl who gets adopted by a wealthy Texan family with questionable influence and several unsavoury characters in its fold, to find out that her birth mother actually sold her to them for one million dollars. Her childhood is one big rollercoaster of emotions—from being deeply loved by a woman she loses at too young an age to then being made to feel unwelcome and worthless within the only family she knows—but her one constant in life remains Milo, a cowboy living in a barn on her family’s ranch. Indiana and Milo slowly become each other’s emotional anchors in life, sometimes the only bright light in an otherwise dark and oppressive circumstance, and over the years, that friendship blossoms into something more. But Indiana’s father, the family’s ruthless patriarch, is a man set on not only keeping them apart, but also on dispersing misery with his every command. And his latest wish is for Milo to marry a woman that is not Indiana.

Spanning many years and several jaw-dropping plot twists along the way, Indiana and Milo’s love story is as twisted as it is beautiful. Jewel E. Ann throws endless roadblocks on their path to happiness, yet through it all, their young love endures. Exquisitely written, well thought out and put together, and so emotionally addictive, I never wanted it to end.

One of my favourite books of the year so far, this delightful friends-to-lovers romance has everything I’ve always loved about Abby Jimenez’s writing—wit, heart, SO much emotion, and a cinnamon roll hero you’d slay dragons for. It’s the story of two emergency room doctors, both trying to get over complicated breakups, who meet as potential rivals, become best of friends while faking to date one another, and end up falling in love while desperately trying to ignore the sizzling sexual tension between them. This is the kind of book you wish you could read for the first time over and over again, every time falling a little more in love with Jacob Maddox.

Christopher Rice takes us back to Sapphire Cove, the luxury beachfront resort on the sparkling Southern California coast, with a love story that filled me with so much emotion, I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. Before travelling the world and working his way to becoming the head pastry chef at an exclusive resort, 40-something Ethan Blake spent his youth supporting himself any way he could—something only a few people in his life know. At first glance, he has very little in common with Roman Walker, a 20-something ‘fitfluencer’ who seems to be trapped in a situation where no part of his life is under his own control. But from the moment their paths cross on the page, we discover that these two men’s fates have been intertwined for a very long time. And while revenge might have brought them into each other’s lives, love is what sets them both free in the end. Christopher Rice writes with such command and feeling for his characters that you can’t help but become invested in their story, delivering a sexy, soapy age-gap romance bursting with secrets, scandal, blackmail, and high drama of the best kind.

ENEMIES TO LOVERS + SMALL TOWN

Darby Dunwell is not—as her name might suggest—a Bond Girl, though she’s been blessed with the body of one. An east coast, ivy-league, trust fund kid, she flees a life of expectation, elocution, and executive board rooms to follow her one true love: Coffee. Isn’t the Washington Coast the Mecca for all things brew related? The deeply eccentric seaside tourist hamlet of Townsend Harbor throws its doors wide open for her sex-positive, bikini-themed coffee shop named, Brewbies. Her grand opening is an unmitigated success, until the county sheriff saunters in to shut her down.
Compulsive rule-follower Sheriff Ethan Townsend is known for helping old ladies across the road, breaking up bar fights, and keeping the sleepy town safe from the flood of seasonal tourists. One-night stands, not so much. After having his heart publicly stomped on, he no longer bothers to ask the name of the woman he’s going to forget in the morning. A policy he regrets when the woman who blew his mind turns out to be his nemesis. Not only is Darby’s salacious coffee shop causing traffic incidents on the Coastal Highway, its proprietress keeps making his life-among other things-as hard as possible.
Darby finds herself embroiled in a feud she never wanted with the cop who is as tight assed as his trousers suggest. But even as their animosity sizzles and the town begins to take sides, Ethan can’t seem to keep his eyes off Darby’s double Ds.

This is a standalone novel in the Townsend Harbor series.

ONE NIGHT STAND + SMALL TOWN

Too many shots of tequila and a one night stand changed everything…

Being a small town sheriff doesn’t leave much time for dating, let alone finding “the one.”
When there’s an itch, I scratch it.
Making sure to stay far away from home because we know how small town folks talk.

I walked into the only bar in town hoping to relax after a long shift.
He started pouring shots and I kept drinking them.
The next thing I know I’m in bed with Finn Buckley.
But we’re both adults. One night. No strings. Tomorrow will be back to business as usual.

But my heart has other plans.

I can’t stop thinking about him.
I find myself searching for excuses to stop at the bar just to catch a glimpse of his smile.
And I want to claw the eyes out of any heifer that pays a little too much attention to him.

This is freaking insane!

Finn wants more than one night with me – he wants everything.
But I gave someone everything once and now the thought of settling down gives me hives, and I’m not sure I can avoid him forever.
Maybe, just maybe change can be a good thing.
Can’t it?

When her new job takes her to a New England boarding school, she’s surprised to find her roommates are all men – including a very handsome one who plays by his own rules.

Sophie Doyle has her dream job as the head athletic trainer for her favorite baseball team (go Red Sox!), a handsome boyfriend, and easy access to the finest cannoli in Boston. When she loses all three and the World Series to boot, she’s forced to apply for the open trainer position at an arts-focused boarding school in New Hampshire. The only available room is a glorified closet in an apartment with three guys: Jonas Voss, the aloof and attractive orchestra teacher, and his two rambunctious roommates.

Sophie knows that training a bunch of privileged high school kids whose idea of a play is A Chorus Line instead of a walk-off homer is going to be a big change from the pro athletes she’s used to. She wasn’t expecting that these students would have big-time talent and even bigger-time problems. Sophie has troubles of her own—Jonas is a full-fledged grump who clearly doesn’t want her near him or the precious piano he never plays.

With sunny optimism, Sophie sets out to win over Jonas and help the kids she’s growing attached to. But when her relationship with Jonas moves to the major leagues and plans change at the end of the season, they have to choose whether they are playing for keeps.

GOTHIC HORROR/WHODDUNIT

At seventeen, Lenora Hope
Hung her sister with a rope

Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred.

Stabbed her father with a knife
Took her mother’s happy life

It’s now 1983, and home-health aide Kit McDeere arrives at a decaying Hope’s End to care for Lenora after her previous nurse fled in the middle of the night. In her seventies and confined to a wheelchair, Lenora was rendered mute by a series of strokes and can only communicate with Kit by tapping out sentences on an old typewriter. One night, Lenora uses it to make a tantalizing offer—I want to tell you everything.

“It wasn’t me,” Lenora said
But she’s the only one not dead

As Kit helps Lenora write about the events leading to the Hope family massacre, it becomes clear there’s more to the tale than people know. But when new details about her predecessor’s departure come to light, Kit starts to suspect Lenora might not be telling the complete truth—and that the seemingly harmless woman in her care could be far more dangerous than she first thought.
