We watched one prince of Wessco abdicate the throne to marry a commoner, then the other leave his wayward bachelor days behind for a woman who’s made him believe he could rule the kingdom one day, and while I absolutely adored those two stories, my heart did a little flip when I realised that the third book in this series would be about a royal bodyguard falling for his charge. There is something utterly irresistible to me about a scenario where the hero is honour-bound to protect the heroine, while desperately fighting his romantic feelings for her. It not only fulfils that addictive ‘knight in shining armour’ imagery that childhood fairy tales have conditioned me to always seek, but the impending danger of discovery also adds a forbidden romance element to the story that makes it impossible for me to look away. Emma Chase weaves an enchanting tale of forbidden love, the slow-burning will-they-won’t-they tension between the lead characters taking its time to grow from sweet and charming, to downright hot and heavy, but once it erupts, it sets the pages on fire. I was besotted by this gripping, royally-flavoured romance set in a world where centuries-old traditions are slowly unravelling to make room for true love, and cannot recommend it highly enough.
Logan St. James has always wanted to be part of something bigger, something that would give his life purpose and direction, so from the moment he could make decisions for himself, he’s dedicated his every waking hour to duty, his focus and hard work eventually earning him a position on the royal security team. As a member of Nicholas Pembrook’s private guard, Logan’s job is to protect the prince’s life with his own, but ever since the eldest Prince of Wessco fell for a young American woman and made New York his second home, Logan’s duties have expanded to include the protection of not only the prince’s wife-to-be, but also of her family. And that is how Logan finds himself staying behind in New York to guard Olivia’s younger sister, Ellie, from the media’s ever-growing interest in her.
I feel more alive just standing next to him, than I have around anyone else. I can only imagine, dream, what it would be like to be held in his arms, to feel the power of his body, his passion and tenderness, surrounding me, inside me.
From the moment Ellie Hammond sets eyes on the man entrusted with her protection, he becomes the object of her every fantasy and pent up desire. Regardless of their ever-growing physical attraction, however, no line of impropriety is ever crossed, a tender friendship forming over time between them, built on mutual affection and trust. And regardless of how hard Ellie tries to make him lose his composure, Logan remains stoic even though he knows that he is already in over his head.
I promised her. I swore I would keep her safe. Be her guard, her wall, so she could fly free.
Ellie’s courage, tenacity and determination continue to draw him to her as much as her beauty, but it is not until he is suddenly reminded of just how short life could be that Logan finally lets himself have the woman he’s loved for so long. As hard as they try to keep their relationship under wraps, however, once their affair is discovered, the very reasons that kept them apart for so many years are the same reasons why everything must change.
“I’m coming to your room tonight.” I whisper against her hair. “If you don’t want that to happen, tell me now. I can’t stop myself, Ellie.”
Sweet, uplifting, and even incredibly erotic in parts, there is something so comforting about the way Emma Chase’s prose never fails to captivate from the start. I loved the way the romantic aspect of Ellie and Logan’s attachment developed slowly over time, their friendship continuing to take precedence. It was incredibly easy for me to like a heroine like Ellie, outspoken and unguarded even when she’s unsure of herself, but in Logan we find the best kind of hero—deeply honourable and loyal, and possessed of the sort of unwavering devotion that always makes him put the needs and happiness of other before his own. The sex scenes between them are luscious and sensual and infused with emotions, never allowing us to forget that we are reading a love story. This book made me so giddy, and I hope this is not the last we hear from the Wessco bunch.
I don’t know if I’ll be any fucking good at love. I’m not quite sure how it’s done. But, for her, I’ll learn. And I’ll do my damnedest to get it right.
