There’s nothing that makes me believe in happily-ever-after more than the idea of an estranged couple finding their way back to one another after years apart, and Kristen Ashley’s new novel is an absolute masterclass in character-driven storytelling, and in its nuanced portrait of two people fighting for what they should have never stopped being—perfect together. But nothing in this novel is easy or cheaply sentimental. Familial tensions, complex human bonds, and long-hidden truths transform the story into a powerful pressure-cooker of emotions that never loses its distinctive Kristen Ashley flavour and depth. There are passages I wanted inked on my skin for the rest of my life, there are scenes I would never want to relive, and there is so much beauty in the most unexpected of moments, all coming together to tell a story of love, forgiveness, and second chances in life, but also of breaking the cycle that is holding us down and setting the example for those we love the most.

What I can only describe as the love child of every soap opera I have every watched, this wonderful, slow-paced, drama-rich, age-gap romance kept me in its claws beginning to end. It’s the story of Indiana, a young girl who gets adopted by a wealthy Texan family with questionable influence and several unsavoury characters in its fold, to find out that her birth mother actually sold her to them for one million dollars. Her childhood is one big rollercoaster of emotions—from being deeply loved by a woman she loses at too young an age to then being made to feel unwelcome and worthless within the only family she knows—but her one constant in life remains Milo, a cowboy living in a barn on her family’s ranch. Indiana and Milo slowly become each other’s emotional anchors in life, sometimes the only bright light in an otherwise dark and oppressive circumstance, and over the years, that friendship blossoms into something more. But Indiana’s father, the family’s ruthless patriarch, is a man set on not only keeping them apart, but also on dispersing misery with his every command. And his latest wish is for Milo to marry a woman that is not Indiana.

Spanning many years and several jaw-dropping plot twists along the way, Indiana and Milo’s love story is as twisted as it is beautiful. Jewel E. Ann throws endless roadblocks on their path to happiness, yet through it all, their young love endures. Exquisitely written, well thought out and put together, and so emotionally addictive, I never wanted it to end.

One of my favourite books of the year so far, this delightful friends-to-lovers romance has everything I’ve always loved about Abby Jimenez’s writing—wit, heart, SO much emotion, and a cinnamon roll hero you’d slay dragons for. It’s the story of two emergency room doctors, both trying to get over complicated breakups, who meet as potential rivals, become best of friends while faking to date one another, and end up falling in love while desperately trying to ignore the sizzling sexual tension between them. This is the kind of book you wish you could read for the first time over and over again, every time falling a little more in love with Jacob Maddox.

Christopher Rice takes us back to Sapphire Cove, the luxury beachfront resort on the sparkling Southern California coast, with a love story that filled me with so much emotion, I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. Before travelling the world and working his way to becoming the head pastry chef at an exclusive resort, 40-something Ethan Blake spent his youth supporting himself any way he could—something only a few people in his life know. At first glance, he has very little in common with Roman Walker, a 20-something ‘fitfluencer’ who seems to be trapped in a situation where no part of his life is under his own control. But from the moment their paths cross on the page, we discover that these two men’s fates have been intertwined for a very long time. And while revenge might have brought them into each other’s lives, love is what sets them both free in the end. Christopher Rice writes with such command and feeling for his characters that you can’t help but become invested in their story, delivering a sexy, soapy age-gap romance bursting with secrets, scandal, blackmail, and high drama of the best kind.

ROMANTIC SUSPENSE

When West Rycroft left his family’s ranch to work in the big city, he never dreamed he would find himself surrounded by celebrities and politicians. Working at McKay-Taggart as a bodyguard and security expert quickly taught him how to navigate the sometimes shark-infested waters of the elite. While some would come to love that world, West has seen enough to know it’s not for him, preferring to keep his distance from his clients—until the day he meets Ally Pearson.

Growing up in the entertainment world, Ally was always in the shadow of others, but now she has broken out from behind the scenes for her own day in the spotlight. The paparazzi isn’t fun, but she knows all too well that it’s part of the gig. She has a good life and lots of fans, but someone has been getting too close for comfort and making threats. To be safe, she hires her own personal knight in shining armor, a cowboy hottie by the name of West. They clash in the beginning, but the minute they fall into bed together something magical happens.

Just as everything seems too good to be true, they are both reminded that there was a reason Ally needed a bodyguard. Her problems have found her again, and this time West will have to put his life on the line or lose everything they’ve found.

Pompous womanizer.

SECOND CHANCES + FORCED PROXIMITY + ROCK STAR ROMANCE

I’m the privileged youngest child of the famous McKallister family. He’s a runaway foster kid living rough. We were never meant to meet. This is where our story begins. It’s nowhere near how it ends.

Grace

The beat. The cheers. The thrill of the unknown. I shouldn’t leave the safety of the music arena—my last name is McKallister, after all, and I’m intimately familiar with worst-case scenarios. But I’m drawn by the talent and the turmoil behind the weary eyes of the drummer on the streets. I’ve never seen anyone my age as wild and unrestrained, a lightning bolt of electricity that never hits the same spot on his bucket drums twice. He plays with such confidence, such rage. I have to know who he is and where he learned to bang out drum solos like he owns the night.

I want to help him. No, to save him. If only Rory will let me.

Rory

When I play, I’m in my element. I know how to draw a crowd and how to keep them riveted. For a small period of time every day, I’m special. Talented. Going somewhere. Little do they know I’m going back to nothing: no family, no friends, no roof over my head. When the music ends, I fade into the background like the undesirable I am. And then she shows up, so pretty and polished and pure. I don’t expect her to stay and talk. I definitely don’t expect her to sit down on the sidewalk and drum a song onto my thigh. Yet here she is—anyone’s ultimate dream girl—promising to save me.

Too bad Grace stumbled upon me a decade too late.

An overworked book publicist with a perfectly planned future hits a snag when she falls in love with her temporary roommate…only to discover he lives seven years in the past…

Sometimes, the worst day of your life happens, and you have to figure out how to live after it.

So Clementine forms a plan to keep her heart safe: work hard, find someone decent to love, and try to remember to chase the moon. The last one is silly and obviously metaphorical, but her aunt always told her that you needed at least one big dream to keep going. And for the last year, that plan has gone off without a hitch. Mostly. The love part is hard because she doesn’t want to get too close to anyone—she isn’t sure her heart can take it.

And then she finds a strange man standing in the kitchen of her late aunt’s apartment. A man with kind eyes and a Southern drawl and a taste for lemon pies. The kind of man that, before it all, she would’ve fallen head-over-heels for. And she might again.

Except, he exists in the past. Seven years ago, to be exact. And she, quite literally, lives seven years in his future.

Her aunt always said the apartment was a pinch in time, a place where moments blended together like watercolors. And Clementine knows that if she lets her heart fall, she’ll be doomed.

After all, love is never a matter of time—but a matter of timing.

This is a standalone novel.

SECOND CHANCES + SMALL TOWN

Ford Spears, star hockey player, is ready to grab the only goal he has ever wanted; a second chance with the mother of his child…

For our son. That’s the explanation my hockey-playing ex gave as to why we needed to spend time as a family at his lake house in the small town where it all began. What I didn’t expect was to show up and discover our son is spending another week at camp, and we are all alone. Oh, and fake a relationship to fulfill his old lady’s wish, too. I realize Ford is on the mission I always feared;

Win me back.

But our past is filled with heartache and regret. It’s going to take a lot more than a few strolls down memory lane or romantic boat rides on the lake to overcome the past. And don’t get me started on the man refusing to wear a shirt around the house. He wants us to have one week together to show we could have it all, but I know that’s not a good idea. Not when I don’t know who believes in us more. Now we are both wondering if being together was always worth the wait…

Lilah Hunter and Shane McCarthy are madly in love—at least, their characters are. Sometimes you just need to bang it out…

Shy paleontologist Thea Pope just wants to get through her sister’s ’80s-themed monstrosity of a TV reality-show wedding so she can get to her summer field work. The only problem? Her sister has turned into the ultimate bridezilla – as in pink parasols, organza hats, forcing people to shave and dye their hair levels of over-the-top, it’s-my-day antics – all while on location in a place literally called hell that reeks of sulfur and lost hopes.

The only thing that can make it worse is when her sister declares that she never even wanted Thea in the wedding at all but that the producers insisted. Ouch doesn’t begin to express how much it hurts that her own sister didn’t even want her to be at her wedding.

There’s only one thing Thea can do after her sister finally pushes her too far – she picks the one man at the wedding her sister cannot stand – the groom’s brother, Kade St. James – and has sex with him.

Is it petty revenge that she’ll be rubbing in her sister’s face from now until eternity? Absolutely. Still, it seems like a great idea at the time, and really what could go wrong?

Pretty much everything it turns out.
